Literacy at Blue Ridge Elementary School

Image

Blue Ridge Elementary School is dedicated to reading excellence. We are a Model Reading Site under the North Carolina State Improvement Project III, sponsored by the Exceptional Children’s Division of the Department of Public Instruction. The goal of this project is to implement research-based instruction and improve the reading and writing performance of all students. Blue Ridge Elementary School participates in programs that focus on the students’ response to specific research-based interventions that are closely monitored to determine appropriate use of instructional strategies.

Using the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, teachers teach the 5 components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Classroom teachers in grades K through 6 teach the core literacy curriculum using the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and resources such as Scott Foresman's Reading Street program, Prentice-HallLetterland phonics, and Words Their Way. In addition, Empowering Writers is used as the core writing curriculum.  All students receive core literacy instruction within a two-hour block. Some students receive supplemental literacy instruction using research-based programs like Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery, HillRAP, or Letterland. To ensure instruction at an appropriate level, the intervention programs are taught to small student groups.
